Billionaires’ Net Worth Hits $18.3 Trillion Amid Global Economic Struggles

Billionaires’ Net Worth Hits $18.3 Trillion Amid Global Economic Struggles

The wealth of the world’s billionaires has skyrocketed by 16% over the past year, reaching an unprecedented level of $18.3 trillion. This marks an 81% increase since 2020, according to a report by Oxfam released on Monday in conjunction with the World Economic Forum in Davos. However, this surge in wealth has deepened economic and political divides, threatening democratic stability.

Sharp Wealth Increase Amid Global Struggles

While billionaires’ fortunes grow, nearly 1 in 4 people globally face challenges in accessing regular meals, and almost half the world’s population lives in poverty. The Oxfam report highlights the stark contrast between growing wealth concentration and widespread economic hardship, urging governments to take action to address inequality.

The study, based on academic research, the Global Inequality Database, and Forbes’ Billionaires List, reveals that billionaire wealth accumulation is accompanied by significant political influence. Billionaires are reportedly 4,000 times more likely to hold political office than the average citizen.

Trump Policies and AI Investments Drive Wealth Growth

Oxfam linked the recent wealth boom to policies under former U.S. President Donald Trump, whose second term featured tax cuts, reduced scrutiny of monopolies, and protections for multinational corporations. Additionally, soaring valuations of AI-driven companies provided unexpected windfalls to already wealthy investors.

Widening Wealth Gap as a Political Risk

Oxfam’s Executive Director, Amitabh Behar, called the growing gap between the ultra-rich and the rest of the world a “severe and unsustainable political crisis.” He emphasized the need for governments to implement national plans to mitigate inequality, including higher taxes on extreme wealth and stricter separation of money from politics. Proposals include restrictions on lobbying and campaign financing reforms.

Although a few countries, such as Norway, already impose wealth taxes, others like the UK, France, and Italy are considering similar measures. Oxfam estimates the $2.5 trillion added to billionaire wealth in 2025 equals the wealth of the poorest 4.1 billion people combined.

Media Influence and Wealth Concentration

The report also highlights the growing control of global media by the wealthiest individuals. Billionaires now own more than half of major media companies worldwide, with notable examples including Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Patrick Soon-Shiong, and Vincent Bolloré.

A Record Number of Billionaires

For the first time, the number of billionaires globally exceeded 3,000 in 2025, with Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk becoming the first person to surpass a net worth of $500 billion. This concentration of wealth and power raises concerns about governments prioritizing elite interests over the welfare of the majority.
