Chinese Tech Giant Roborock Introduces AI-Driven Robotic Arm for Obstacle Removal

Chinese Tech Giant Roborock Introduces AI-Driven Robotic Arm for Obstacle Removal

Chinese robot vacuum manufacturer Roborock has taken a groundbreaking step in the robotics industry, unveiling the Saros Z70, a robot vacuum cleaner equipped with an AI-powered folding arm. This innovative device is designed to remove obstacles like socks, small towels, tissues, and sandals weighing less than 300 grams (10.58 ounces), making it one of the most advanced robotic vacuums on the market.

A Leap Toward Smarter Homes

Roborock President Quan Gang believes this development signals a pivotal moment for the industry. Quan stated that robot vacuums could become as indispensable as washing machines within the next three years, thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence.

“If the era of AI flourishing has really arrived, I’m confident that robot vacuum cleaners will be the first category to apply AI,” said Quan in Mandarin.

The Saros Z70 is expected to roll out in major global markets during the first half of 2025, though pricing details have yet to be disclosed. The announcement comes just ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which kicks off this week in Las Vegas, where the product is expected to garner significant attention.

Advancing AI in Robotics

The Saros Z70’s AI capabilities were developed in-house by Roborock. The robot’s ability to intelligently detect and remove obstructions represents a significant improvement in home automation. This development reflects Roborock’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into their products, pushing the boundaries of what robot vacuums can achieve.

A Growing Market with Challenges

Despite the growing popularity of robotic vacuums, penetration rates remain relatively low—just over 10% in developed countries and even lower in developing nations. Quan sees this as both a challenge and an opportunity, with AI integration poised to drive growth in the sector.

The company has already made significant strides in international markets like the U.S., where sales gained momentum in 2023, as well as in Germany, China, and South Korea. Roborock ensures compliance with local data privacy regulations, a crucial aspect in today’s tech landscape.

Competing in a Crowded Field

Roborock faces stiff competition in the robotic vacuum market, which has evolved significantly since the launch of iRobot’s Roomba in 2002. Competitors like Ecovacs and iRobot have introduced their own innovative models, including self-emptying dustbins and advanced navigation systems.

For instance, Roborock’s S8 MaxV Ultra ($1,799.99) was recently named the best “hands-free” robot vacuum by The Verge, praised for its ability to empty its own dustbin, refill mop tanks, and clean mop pads. Meanwhile, Wired highlighted Roborock’s Qrevo S ($800), which uses lidar-based navigation and AI to distinguish between carpet and tile surfaces.

Other companies, such as Ecovacs and iRobot, are also making waves. CNET named the Ecovacs Deebot T30S Combo ($900) and the iRobot Roomba Combo J7 Plus ($359) among the best robotic vacuums of 2025.

Investment in Research and Development

Roborock has been investing heavily in research and development, dedicating 9.1% of its operating revenue in the first three quarters of 2024 to R&D, up from just over 7% in previous years. The company operates a dedicated AI lab in Shanghai and a research institute in Shenzhen, employing around 60 researchers focused solely on technology innovation. Plans are underway to expand this team to 300 researchers, though finding qualified talent has been a challenge, according to Quan.

Financial Performance

Roborock’s financial performance has been strong, with operating revenue rising 23.2% year-over-year to 7 billion yuan ($960 million) in the first three quarters of 2024. The company reported a profit of 1.47 billion yuan during the same period. Shares of Roborock, listed in Shanghai, rose 2.6% after news of the Saros Z70’s announcement, contributing to a 10.3% increase in stock value throughout 2024.

Expanding Beyond Vacuums

In addition to the Saros Z70, Roborock is expanding its product line, announcing updates to its washing machines, which now feature drying capabilities within the same unit. This diversification highlights the company’s ambition to become a leader in home automation.

The Future of Robotic Vacuums

As the robotics industry continues to innovate, Roborock’s Saros Z70 represents a significant milestone. By combining advanced AI technology with practical functionality, Roborock is positioning itself as a frontrunner in the race to make smart home devices an essential part of everyday life.

With the Saros Z70 set to hit the market soon, and competition heating up, the stage is set for a transformative year in the world of robotic vacuums.
