Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a powerful tool in this pursuit, helping F1 teams optimize performance on the track, streamline operations, and even engage with fans. At the forefront of this technological revolution are teams like McLaren, Aston Martin, and Red Bull, who are pushing the boundaries of what AI can achieve in motorsports.

 

McLaren’s AI Innovations

At the McLaren Technology Center (MTC) in Woking, England, the 60-year-old motorsports giant has quietly embraced AI to refine its performance. Dan Keyworth, McLaren’s director of business technology, revealed that the team has long relied on traditional machine learning to make probability-based decisions. However, recent advancements in generative AI are enabling McLaren to achieve unprecedented results.

One of the key innovations at McLaren is the use of “digital twins” — 3D digital replicas of real race cars. These models allow engineers to simulate race conditions and predict how vehicles will perform under various scenarios. From determining optimal pit stop durations to selecting the best tires for changing weather conditions, AI-powered simulations are providing McLaren with insights that were previously unattainable.

“What AI allows us to do from a generative perspective is to actually game out more of those actual scenarios and go, ‘What will happen?’” Keyworth explained. These simulations are becoming increasingly accurate, delivering insights that are, as Keyworth put it, “almost scary.”

Beyond car performance, McLaren is also using AI to enhance day-to-day operations and commercialization. For example, AI helps the team personalize its outreach to fans in growing markets like the U.S., making the sport more engaging and accessible.

 

Aston Martin and Red Bull’s Data-Driven Approach

McLaren isn’t the only team harnessing AI. Aston Martin Aramco is leveraging “data lakes” — massive repositories of information — and machine learning algorithms to analyze critical variables like tire performance, weather, and track conditions. These tools enable predictive analytics, helping engineers make better-informed decisions.

Clare Lansley, Aston Martin’s chief information officer, highlighted how these technologies are transforming the sport. “By adopting this tech, we are going to be able to free up multiple engineers so they can focus more acutely on car performance,” she said.

Red Bull’s Visa Cash App RB team is also a leader in AI adoption. Guillaume Dezoteux, the team’s head of vehicle performance, noted that AI reduces the need for exhaustive simulations, saving valuable time. “It means you don’t need to run 100 simulations,” he explained. AI’s ability to analyze and predict outcomes down to “hundreds and thousandths of a second” is proving invaluable in a sport where milliseconds can determine the winner.

Connectivity: The Backbone of F1 Innovation

None of these technological advancements would be possible without robust connectivity. McLaren relies on IT tools from partners like Cisco and Google to ensure seamless data flow during races. Mobile data centers — compact server rooms that travel to each race — provide real-time data processing and storage, enabling teams to stay agile and responsive.

“Connectivity is probably the lifeblood of the sport,” Keyworth said. “Without it, nothing starts. No car can be on the track safely.”

 

AI’s Commercial and Operational Benefits

AI isn’t just improving performance on the track; it’s also transforming the business side of F1. McLaren is using AI to streamline operations, making processes faster and more efficient. Keyworth emphasized that AI isn’t about replacing jobs but eliminating tedious tasks so employees can focus on higher-value work. “It’s not a labor replacement — it’s a ‘laborious’ replacement,” he said.
