Gaming Revenue Nears $189 Billion: Mobile and Console Platforms Lead the Way

The global gaming industry is projected to reach revenues of approximately $188.8 billion in 2025, marking an annual growth rate of 3.4%, according to a report by the gaming analytics platform “Newzoo.” This growth signals a mature phase for the industry following the extraordinary surge experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pace of growth has slowed compared to previous years, the industry continues to demonstrate remarkable adaptability, driven by shifts in pricing models and increased user spending.

Mobile Gaming Dominates but with Slower Growth

Mobile gaming remains the largest segment of the gaming market, generating $103 billion, which accounts for 55% of the total revenue. However, this segment’s annual growth rate is now at 2.9%, primarily due to market saturation in East Asian regions such as China, South Korea, and Japan. On the other hand, Western markets are witnessing a gradual increase in user spending alongside the expansion of direct sales models outside traditional app stores.

Console Gaming Leads Growth

The console gaming sector is the fastest-growing segment in 2025, with revenues expected to reach $45.9 billion, reflecting a 5.5% increase. This growth has been fueled by several factors, including the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, higher game prices, and a stronger lineup of blockbuster game releases.

Meanwhile, the PC gaming market is projected to generate $39.9 billion in revenues with a modest growth rate of 2.5%. This growth is primarily driven by robust performance in Asian markets, despite declining revenues for some live-service games in Western regions.

Combined, the PC and console gaming segments are expected to contribute about $85.8 billion, making up 45% of the global gaming market. This underscores the enduring appeal of premium, high-value gaming platforms.

From Quantitative to Value-Driven Growth

The data highlights a clear transition in the gaming industry’s growth model, shifting from increasing player numbers to maximizing the value of individual players. Revenue is increasingly reliant on blockbuster games, post-launch monetization strategies, and pricing policies, alongside the growing influence of user-generated content platforms such as Roblox.

Asia-Pacific Remains at the Forefront

The Asia-Pacific region continues to lead the global gaming market, generating $87.6 billion in revenues, which accounts for 46% of the total market. Despite slower growth, the region remains the industry’s primary driver. In contrast, Latin America is experiencing an annual growth rate of 6.4%, while the Middle East and Africa are growing even faster at 7.5%, driven by the proliferation of smartphones and free-to-play gaming models.

On a national level, China and the United States dominate the consumer gaming market, with revenues of $49.8 billion and $49.6 billion, respectively, accounting for nearly half of global gaming expenditure.

3.6 Billion Gamers Worldwide: Approaching Saturation

The number of global gamers is expected to reach 3.58 billion in 2025, representing 60% of internet users, with a growth rate of 4.4%. However, the market is nearing saturation, with the penetration rate of gaming among internet users stabilizing. Mobile gaming continues to dominate, boasting approximately 3 billion players (83%), compared to 936 million PC gamers and 645 million console gamers. Cross-platform gaming is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among younger generations.

Future Outlook: Stability and Shifting Dynamics by 2028

By 2028, the global gaming market is forecasted to grow to $206.5 billion, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3%. Console gaming is expected to lead this growth, with a projected 4.7% annual increase, supported by the anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI in 2026 and next-generation consoles in 2027. The PC gaming segment is expected to grow at a rate of 3.3%, followed by mobile gaming at 2.2%.

The number of global gamers is projected to approach 3.9 billion by 2028, with PC gamers surpassing the 1 billion mark for the first time.
