On Saturday morning, May 24, 2025, Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly known as Twitter), experienced a significant outage affecting tens of thousands of users. According to Downdetector, an analytics platform that tracks user-reported issues, approximately 25,000 users encountered problems with the platform starting around 8:45 a.m. ET.
Details of the Outage
The issue began early in the morning, with around 21,000 users reporting difficulties by 8:30 a.m. ET. By 9:55 a.m., the situation appeared to be improving, with the number of users facing issues dropping to about 2,000. However, intermittent problems persisted for some users until around 11 a.m.
This marks the second outage in less than a week for X. The platform also experienced downtime on Thursday, compounding frustrations among users.
Musk’s Response
Elon Musk addressed the outage on X, emphasizing the need for “major operational improvements.” He stated that the platform’s failover redundancy, which is designed to prevent such outages, “should have worked, but did not.” Musk also shared his personal commitment to resolving these issues, noting that he has been spending long hours at work and sleeping in conference, server, and factory rooms to ensure progress.
Musk further highlighted the critical nature of his role in overseeing not just X but also his other ventures, such as Tesla and SpaceX. He mentioned the importance of being “super focused” as these companies roll out essential technologies.
A History of Outages
Since Musk’s acquisition of X in 2022, the platform has experienced several widespread outages. In March 2025, the site suffered another significant disruption, which Musk attributed to a “massive cyberattack.” He explained that while X faces daily attacks, this particular incident involved substantial resources.
The ongoing reliability issues have raised questions about the platform’s infrastructure and operational capabilities under Musk’s leadership.
