From Tesla to SpaceX: How Elon Musk Built a $600 Billion Empire

Elon Musk, the CEO and founder of Tesla, has become the first individual in history to surpass a net worth of $600 billion. This milestone came after adding $167 billion to his wealth in a single day, propelled by the anticipated public offering of his space exploration company, SpaceX, which is expected to be valued at $800 billion. Musk’s 42% stake in SpaceX alone is estimated at $317 billion.

Musk’s wealth has grown exponentially over the years, with an addition of $205 billion since the start of this year alone, driven by Tesla’s soaring stock prices and advancements in autonomous vehicle technology. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk’s wealth increase has been unmatched. He has set multiple records, being the first individual to reach $300 billion, $400 billion, and now $600 billion in net worth.

The Rise of Elon Musk’s Wealth

In 2013, Musk’s net worth was estimated at $4.8 billion when he first appeared on Bloomberg’s list of billionaires. By 2020, his fortune had skyrocketed to $167 billion, thanks to Tesla becoming the most valuable automaker in the world. By January 2021, Musk had officially become the richest person globally. However, in 2022, his wealth dropped to $138 billion due to Tesla’s market valuation declining by over $700 billion amidst investor concerns about production disruptions and demand issues, as well as Musk’s focus on Twitter (now X).

Despite setbacks, Musk rebounded in 2023, with his wealth growing to $229 billion as Tesla’s deliveries surged. By 2024, Musk crossed the $400 billion mark, benefiting from SpaceX stock sales and other ventures. His achievements highlight an extraordinary wealth trajectory, as his fortune has grown over 13,000% in just 12 years.

Musk’s Business Empire

Elon Musk’s entrepreneurial ventures span multiple industries, from electric vehicles to space technology. He is the CEO of Tesla, the world’s most valuable car manufacturer, headquartered in Austin, Texas. Tesla specializes in electric vehicles and solar energy solutions. Musk also leads SpaceX, a private aerospace company contracted by NASA for resupplying the International Space Station. Additionally, he owns X, a social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Musk’s holdings in Tesla are significant, with approximately 13% ownership and around 304 million stock options from his 2018 compensation package. While this package faced legal challenges and was rejected by shareholders in 2024, the options remain pending the outcome of appeals.

SpaceX has seen tremendous growth, with its valuation reaching $350 billion in late 2024, based on recent stock purchase offers. Musk is also the majority owner of X Corp, holding 79% of the company after acquiring it for $44 billion in 2022. However, the platform’s value has declined by roughly 72% since the acquisition, according to Fidelity’s filings.

Musk’s other ventures include Neuralink, xAI, and The Boring Company. These innovative startups focus on artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, and underground transportation systems, showcasing Musk’s forward-thinking approach to solving complex global challenges.

Early Life and Career

Elon Musk was born in South Africa to an engineer father and a dietitian mother. At 17, he moved to Canada to attend university, partly to avoid mandatory military service during apartheid. He later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned degrees in physics and economics. Musk briefly attended Stanford University for postgraduate studies but left after a few days to pursue his entrepreneurial interests.

In 1995, Musk co-founded Zip2, an online publishing platform, which was sold for over $300 million four years later. He reinvested the proceeds into X.com, an online payment system that eventually became PayPal, which was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002. Musk then founded SpaceX, aiming to revolutionize space exploration, and Tesla, which has become synonymous with electric vehicles and clean energy.

A Visionary Leader

Musk’s vision extends beyond Earth. He has expressed his desire to retire on Mars and has committed to advancing technologies that could enable human settlement on the Red Planet. In 2012, he joined the Giving Pledge, promising to donate the majority of his wealth to philanthropic causes.

From his groundbreaking work in sustainable energy to his ambitions in space exploration, Musk remains one of the most influential figures of our time. His journey from a small-town entrepreneur to the wealthiest person in history is a testament to his relentless drive, innovative thinking, and ability to reshape entire industries.
