Beijing Urges Cooperation Amid U.S. Tariff Threats

In a recent development, China has emphasized the importance of cooperation with the United States as potential trade tensions loom with the election of President-elect Donald Trump. This call for collaboration comes in response to Trump’s campaign threats of imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods.

China’s Stance

Speaking to reporters, a spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce highlighted the country’s willingness to engage with the U.S. based on mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. The spokesperson, He Yongqian, stressed the need to enhance communication and resolve differences to promote stable and healthy economic relations. These remarks align with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s earlier message congratulating Trump and emphasizing the benefits of bilateral cooperation.

Possible Trade Measures

The potential for increased tariffs and restrictions, particularly on high-end technology, has raised concerns. During his first term, Trump adopted a tougher stance on Beijing, and his recent statements suggest a continuation or intensification of this approach. Analysts like Yue Su from the Economist Intelligence Unit predict that Trump may impose new tariffs in the coming year, potentially leveraging the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

Economic Implications

While some analysts are concerned about the impact of new tariffs, others, like David Chao from Invesco, suggest that the situation may not be as dire. Chao believes the administration might delay implementing tariffs to gain concessions from China, such as increased purchases of American goods. Nevertheless, a possible 10% tariff on all exports to the U.S. could weaken global demand, affecting China and the broader Asian market.
