China’s leading tech giant, Baidu, is gearing up to release the next iteration of its artificial intelligence (AI) foundation model later this year, according to a source familiar with the matter. The announcement signals Baidu’s efforts to maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly advancing AI landscape, as newer players like DeepSeek continue to disrupt the market.
Baidu’s Next-Gen AI: A Game-Changer?
The upcoming AI model, dubbed Ernie 5.0, is expected to feature substantial advancements in multimodal capabilities. Multimodal AI refers to systems that can process and integrate text, video, images, and audio, enabling seamless cross-category conversions such as text-to-video or video-to-text. These capabilities are particularly critical for developing sophisticated AI applications in communication, content creation, and more.
Foundation models like Ernie 5.0 are designed to perform a wide variety of tasks, including generating text and images, understanding natural language, and facilitating human-like interactions. Baidu’s planned enhancements suggest the company is doubling down on innovation to compete with global players like OpenAI, which released GPT-4o in 2024.
Racing to Innovate in a Crowded Market
Baidu’s move comes at a time when Chinese tech companies are in a heated race to develop AI models that can rival their U.S. counterparts. In January 2025, Hangzhou-based startup DeepSeek shook the tech industry with an open-source AI model praised for its advanced reasoning capabilities and cost-efficiency. DeepSeek’s innovation prompted a global tech stock sell-off, highlighting the fierce competition in the AI space.
Baidu was the first major Chinese company to release a ChatGPT-like chatbot, called Ernie, in March 2023. However, despite its initial success, Ernie has since been overshadowed by AI advancements from other Chinese firms, including Alibaba and ByteDance, as well as emerging startups.
Driving Productivity Through Cost Efficiency
At the World Governments Summit in Dubai earlier this week, Baidu CEO Robin Li emphasized the importance of reducing the cost of deploying foundation models. “The inference cost [of foundation models] can be reduced by more than 90% over 12 months,” Li stated. “If you can reduce the cost by a certain percentage, then that means your productivity increases by that kind of percentage. I think that’s pretty much the nature of innovation.”
Li’s comments underscore the broader trend in AI development: achieving cost reduction while improving performance. This approach not only enhances accessibility but also expands the potential applications of AI across industries.
Ernie’s Evolution and Baidu’s AI Ecosystem
The current version of Baidu’s AI model, Ernie 4.0, was released in October 2023, with an upgraded “turbo” version launched in August 2024. The Ernie ecosystem has integrated generative AI into various Baidu products, including cloud storage, content creation, and business tools.
One of Baidu’s standout AI-driven platforms is Wenku, which allows users to create presentations and other documents. By the end of 2024, Wenku had reached 40 million paying users, a 60% increase from the previous year. In January 2025, Baidu began rolling out new AI-powered features on Wenku, such as generating presentations based on financial filings.
Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
While Baidu continues to innovate, its growth has been relatively modest compared to competitors. For example, Alibaba’s shares have surged by 33% this year, while Baidu’s shares have risen by only 6%. Tencent has also posted gains of about 4% in 2025. Meanwhile, ByteDance, a key player in the AI space, remains privately held and unlisted.
Baidu’s ability to regain momentum in the AI sector will likely hinge on the success of Ernie 5.0 and its capacity to differentiate itself in a competitive market. The company has yet to officially confirm the release date or specific features of the new model.
The Road Ahead for AI Innovation
As AI technology continues to evolve, the competition between Chinese and U.S.-based companies is expected to intensify. Baidu’s efforts to enhance multimodal capabilities and cut costs reflect the broader global push toward more efficient and versatile AI solutions.
With DeepSeek disrupting the market and OpenAI maintaining its leadership in the West, Baidu’s upcoming Ernie 5.0 release could be a pivotal moment for both the company and the broader AI industry.
